Lake-effect bands off Lake Michigan can make the west side of the region far worse than downtown. In its write-up of the January 19–21, 2026 winter storm, NWS Grand Rapids reported that conditions west of US-131 were treacherous on Monday morning, with a 100+ car pileup in southern Ottawa County on I-196.

Clear snow and ice off the windows, lights and roof before you go, and don't start off until the windshield is defrosted.
